How DSP Media Buying Works
DSP media buying means using a demand-side platform to buy ad space one impression at a time, through automated auctions, instead of booking placements with each publisher separately. Here is what happens between setting up a campaign and reading the report.
Audience data
You start by deciding who you want to reach. That might be your own data, such as customer lists or recent site visitors, contextual signals like the topic of a page, or audience segments from the platform or a data provider. Location, device and time of day narrow it down further.
Real-time bidding
When someone opens a page or app with ad space, the publisher's supply-side platform sends out a bid request. The DSP checks it against your targeting and decides whether to bid, and how much. The auction is over in a fraction of a second, before the page has finished loading.
Supply
Impressions come through ad exchanges and SSPs. Some are bought in open auctions, others through private marketplace or programmatic guaranteed deals agreed with particular publishers. Deals usually cost more, but you get more say over where the ads appear.
Optimisation
Once the campaign is live, bids, audiences, placements, frequency caps and creative are adjusted as the data comes in. Sites and apps with poor viewability or suspicious traffic are excluded, and budget moves towards what is working.
Reporting
You see impressions, reach, frequency, viewability, clicks and video completion, plus conversions where tracking allows. Good reporting also tells you which sites and apps the ads actually ran on.

Which DSPs and Supply We Buy Through
There is no single best DSP. Each one has its own strengths in data, inventory and formats, so the right choice depends on the brief. We can plan across leading DSPs such as The Trade Desk, Google Display & Video 360 and Amazon DSP, and pick the one that suits your audience, channels and budget.
The Trade Desk
An independent DSP with wide reach across display, video, audio and connected TV.
Google Display & Video 360
Google's DSP, often called DV360, with access to YouTube inventory and Google's audience signals.
Amazon DSP
Useful when shopping behaviour matters, with Amazon's audience data available on and off Amazon's own sites.
These are well-known industry examples, not a list of exclusive partnerships.
Where the inventory comes from
The DSP is only half of it. We also look at which exchanges and SSPs reach the inventory you want, and drop routes that add cost without adding anything. The less that goes on middlemen, the more of the budget ends up as media.
Formats cover display, video, native, mobile in-app and connected TV. If TV screens are part of the plan, our connected TV advertising page explains how CTV is bought and measured.
Media Strategies Aligned to Campaign Goals
Different programmatic campaigns require different buying approaches. We help advertisers align the media strategy with the audience stage, campaign timing, and desired outcome.
Awareness & Reach
For brands looking to build visibility across relevant media environments and audience groups.
Prospecting
For campaigns focused on reaching new audiences based on interest, context, geography, or market opportunity.
Engagement & Consideration
For advertisers looking to stay visible with users who may need more exposure before taking action.
Seasonal & Promotional
For product launches, sale windows, festive periods, or market-specific promotions.
Tailored Media Activation
For campaigns needing a customised mix of audience, inventory, creative, frequency, and reporting requirements.
What DSP Media Buying Costs and How Pricing Works
Programmatic media is almost always bought on CPM, the cost per thousand impressions. What you end up paying depends on a few things, and on who is doing the buying.
CPM-based buying
You bid for impressions and the auction sets the price. A campaign can be optimised towards cost per click, per view or per action, but the media underneath is still bought per thousand impressions.
Managed service
A specialist team plans, buys and optimises for you. You pay for the media plus a management fee or margin, and you don't need your own platform contract or trained staff.
Self-serve
You take your own DSP seat and run it in-house. The media can work out cheaper, but platforms often ask for a minimum spend commitment and you need people who know the platform well.
What moves the price
Tighter targeting and paid data segments add cost. Broad contextual targeting costs less.
Video and CTV usually cost more per thousand impressions than standard display or native.
Private deals and premium publishers cost more than the open exchange, but give more control.
Prices rise in busy periods. Black Friday and the run-up to Christmas are the obvious ones.
Data fees, brand-safety and verification tools can sit on top of the media cost.
We don't publish a rate card, because no two plans cost the same. Tell us what you want the campaign to do and we'll walk you through how the media, data and fees break down before anything goes live.
A Worked Example: Prospecting and Retargeting
A made-up UK homeware retailer runs a six-week flight with £30,000 of media. The numbers are round and hypothetical, chosen to show how the pieces fit together. This is not a client result, and real CPMs vary a lot by audience, format and season.
Finding new customers
Contextual and interest-based audiences across the UK on display and online video, with a cap of three ads per person per week.
- Budget
- £21,000
- Example CPM
- £7
- Impressions
- 3m
Bringing visitors back
People who visited the site in the last 30 days without buying, reached on display and native, with past buyers excluded.
- Budget
- £9,000
- Example CPM
- £6
- Impressions
- 1.5m
Spend is spread evenly while the data builds up. Placements with low viewability or odd-looking traffic are checked and excluded early.
Budget shifts towards the audiences and creative bringing in visits at the lowest cost. A 7-day retargeting window is tested against the 30-day one.
The flight is judged on new-customer sales and cost per acquisition in the retailer's own analytics, not on clicks, and the findings shape the next plan.
